Highlands Residential Services’ annual “Quawana’s Coats” Make a Difference Day coat giveaway held on Saturday, Oct. 26 was a huge success. 

An estimated 300 people came out on that clear, cool morning to get a coat or two. Everyone was treated to chili dogs, beef soup, chips, salsa and soda. It was great fun to visit with neighbors.

Make a Difference Day is a national event that was founded more than 20 years ago. Sponsors include Points of Light, USA Weekend and Gannett. In 2012, Shaquawana Wester, HRS youth programs coordinator, began the coat drive as a part of this national day of community service. 

Wester was inspired after seeing a homeless man with no coat in a local park on a cold day.
