Women's Heart Health February is American Heart Month, and Friday, Feb. 3, is “Wear Red Day” to signify Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) — including heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure — is the No. 1 killer of women and men in the United States. It is a leading cause of disability, preventing Americans from working and enjoying family activities.

Some ways to prevent heart disease are:

• Change your diet and lifestyle. Stop smoking and exercise.
• Cut back on saturated fat foods, such as meats and whole-fat dairy products.
• Limit trans fats found in fried and processed foods.
• Decrease your intake of sugary drinks, especially sodas.
• Keep blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol under control.
